Box and whisker plots are graphical way of showing and comparing the minimum, maximum, median, lower quartile, upper quartile and inter-quartile range. Another advantage of box and whisker plots is that are are quick and easy to do (yay!). Pen and Paper Method: Step 1) Collect the minimum, maximum, median, lower quartile and the upper quartile of your data. If you are unsure about how to find these click here. Step 2) Work out and draw a appropriate scale on your graph paper. Step 3) Draw four vertical lines about an inch long above your minimum, maximum, lower quartile and upper quartile points on your graph. Step 4) Join the each pair of outside lines together with a single line going through the center. Step 5) Join the inner lines together with two lines; one from each end. Step 6) Draw on another inch long line above your median point.
Autograph 1 Method (You work out the min, max etc): Step 1) Collect the minimum, maximum, median, lower quartile and the upper quartile of your data. If you are unsure about how to find these click here. Step 2) Open Autograph and make sure you are using a stats page (file, close then file, new 1D stats graph). Step 3) Right click anyway on the graph and select "Enter box and whisker diagram". Enter your data collected in step 1 and click ok.
Autograph 2nd Method (Autograph works out min, max, etc.): Step 1) Open Autograph and make sure you are using a stats page (file, close then file, new 1D stats graph). Step 2) Right click in some black space and select "Enter Raw Data" Step 3) Give your data set a name and then enter (or paste) your data into the column on the left. Step 4) Click ok and then right click again select "Box and Whisker Diagram" Step 5) Press ok and voila! To Edit The Formatting In Autograph: One you have your box and whisker plot you may want to change the colour of it etc. This can be done like so: Step 1) Click on the Box and Whisker Plot you intend to format. To move the plot: Simply click and drag it. To alter its colour: Right click on it and select "Edit Draw Options"
